Peer supporters

Kamusta!

As an ASSIST Global Peer Supporter, you have access to exclusive content on this site that will help you speak to your peers about the negative effects of smoking.

On each of the topic pages, you’ll see a section with the Peer Supporters icon. Here you’ll find helpful information that you can share with your friends, in person or online.

Shareable Content

To make sharing content easier, we have provided some images and captions that you can save, copy and paste directly into a message or your favourite social media platform. You’ll find these under each topic page and also further down this page.

First, read the content below about how to communicate with your peers. This will help you speak to them more effectively.

Think WHEN
Choose a time when your friend is free to chat and not focussed on something else.

Think WHERE
Think about where you hang out together. Walking to school, at each other’s houses, online. It doesn’t have to always be a chat in school.

Think HOW
Remember, be friendly and confident, listen to what your friend has to say. Show some empathy, and don’t be judgmental.

Think TOPIC
Make it relevant! What would most interest your friend? Their health, the environment? Or another topic?

What good communication looks like…

Make eye contact.

Smile and nod when your friend is talking.

Listen carefully without interrupting.

Ask questions when they have spoken.

Recognise when someone loses interest and either:
– Share a different fact.
– Change the subject completely
– Walk away.

What bad communication looks like…

Looking at your phone and not making
eye contact.

Yawning or acting like you’re not interested.

Being aggressive or starting an argument.

Not listening to other people’s opinions.
